Operating Performance of External Non-Involute Spur?and Helical Gears: A Review

In practical use, most gears have an involute shape of tooth flanks. However, external some drawbacks, such as unfavourable kinematic conditions at the beginning and end meshing, a limited minimum number teeth, highly loaded convex-convex (i.e., non-conformal) contact. Researchers developed analysed various non-involute forms flanks, but they not been widely accepted. The main reasons are higher manufacturing costs sensitivity to assembly errors. Analyses teeth mostly theoretical (analytical numerical), while there is lack experimental confirmations assumptions. This paper reviews shapes, their operating characteristics possibilities use compared gears. Established criteria, Hertzian pressure, oil film thickness, bending stress root tooth, contact temperature, gear noise, were used for assessment. results analytical studies research on S-gears presented in more detail. surface durability lower heat load when usability increasing with development new technologies materials. advantages shapes so significant that could easily displace gears, which cheaper manufacture.
